How far does an electric VW camper travel?

How Far Does an eDub Electric Conversion Actually Travel?

This is one of the most common questions we get.

People want to know how far an electric campervan conversion will take them—understandably so!

Real-World Range, Not Lab Fiction

We’ve put together three different battery packs for our VW Type 2 camper conversions (that’s any Split Screen or Bay Window camper). All use a single battery box, neatly fitted where the engine used to be.

When we talk about “range,” we’re giving you real-world figures. Unlike modern EVs that quote inflated ranges from lab-based rolling road tests (in perfect wind-tunnel conditions), we test our vans in the real world. That means me and the team actually drive around the countryside and give you the true numbers.

We have conducted real-world testing that combines motorway driving with back lane driving over hills to provide you with an estimated range for our conversions. While we can offer statistics on battery pack size, the physical size of the vehicle dictates the capacity and range of the battery pack. For instance, we cannot fit a large number of batteries inside smaller vehicles like the Mini, Fiat 500, or Beetle. Consequently, the capacity and range will be limited. However, larger vehicles can accommodate more batteries, resulting in a larger capacity and range.

Another important regulation we must adhere to is the payload capacity of our vehicles. Each chassis is designed to support a specific weight limit, and exceeding it could lead to dangerous and illegal situations - which we definitely want to avoid! As a result, we face restrictions when it comes to accommodating batteries, which not only require ample space but also contribute significantly to the overall weight.

Our electric VW Camper vans come in a range of pack sizes to suit your needs. Our smallest pack size, with around 37 kWh of battery capacity, will give you a 100-mile range - and with 2.6 miles to the kWh, you can be sure you're getting the most out of your vehicle. Our 62 kWh battery pack offers even more range, with a real-world number of 166 miles. So whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a longer road trip, we've got you covered.

We like to give our customers a fair expectation of our vehicle's battery life. Instead of claiming a 200-mile range, we run the batteries down to about 10 percent, which is a more realistic estimation of their capabilities. We believe in complete honesty and transparency so that you can plan your trips with confidence and without any surprises.

This sheds light on the range of these vehicles and how it operates. If you have any further inquiries, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
